Why Drive to Spain?
In 2026, flights are expensive, airports are stressful, and car hire at the other end blows up the budget. If you live in southern France, Spain is right next door — and driving is often faster, cheaper and more pleasant than flying.
The benefits are clear: no luggage limits, total freedom once you arrive, no airport transfers, and the ability to stop along the way. Plus, the AP-7 motorway has been toll-free on the Spanish side since 2021.
Driving Times from Major French Cities
From Perpignan, it’s about 2 hours to the Costa Dorada (Cubelles). From Montpellier, about 2 hours 30. From Toulouse, about 3 hours. From Marseille, about 4 hours. From Lyon, about 5 hours 30.
The route is straightforward: A9 motorway to the Spanish border (Le Perthus), then AP-7 towards Barcelona/Tarragona, exit at Cubelles.
Recommended Stops Along the Way
From Toulouse: Stop at Carcassonne
If you’re coming from the west, Carcassonne makes a logical break. The medieval citadel is worth a coffee and a wander.
The Border: Le Perthus
The border crossing at Le Perthus is quick — no permanent controls within Schengen. It’s also a chance to fill up with petrol on the Spanish side, where prices are typically lower.
Figueres and the Dalí Museum
If you have time, Figueres is 30 minutes past the border. The Dalí Theatre-Museum is a unique experience. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the visit.
Where to Stay: The Costa Dorada
Rather than aiming for Barcelona (difficult parking, heavy traffic, expensive hotels), base yourself on the Costa Dorada. Cubelles is a quiet Catalan village 45 minutes south of Barcelona, directly accessible from the motorway.
Hotel Mas Trader in Cubelles is an excellent base for a driving holiday. The hotel has parking, and its location makes it easy to explore: Barcelona is 45 minutes north, Tarragona 30 minutes south, Sitges 20 minutes away, and the Penedès wine region 30 minutes inland.
The hotel is a Catalan masía, fully renovated, with 15 rooms, two pools, a Catalan cuisine restaurant (Ocarina Gust) and a cocktail bar (BugleBar). Rooms start at €70 per night for two guests, express breakfast included.
What You Need to Know About Driving in Spain
Speed limits are similar to France: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on national roads, 50 km/h in towns. The permitted blood alcohol level is 0.5 g/l. Roundabouts work the same way.
Watch out for LEZ (low emission zones): Barcelona has one that affects older vehicles. If your car is recent, no problem. Check the AMB website if unsure.
Petrol is generally cheaper in Spain than in France, especially diesel. Fill up after the border.
Estimated Budget
For a 4-night stay from Toulouse for two: petrol return approximately €80-100, French tolls approximately €30-40 (free on the Spanish side), hotel 4 nights with breakfast from €236 at Mas Trader, meals approximately €20-30 per person per meal. Total estimate: €450-600 for two, or €225-300 per person for 4 nights of sunshine. That’s less than a return flight to the Balearics.
